Our hand-carved cutting boards combine a sculptural silhouette of curved shoulders and a subtly rounded base with the natural beauty of curly maple wood. Ideal for cutting smaller food items such as fruit or small vegetables or used as a serving board for cheese or hors d'oeuvres. The unique grain of curly maple and the artisanal craftsmanship create a kitchen tool that serves as much as a decorative display item as it does a functional object for daily use.

Each board is made from a single piece of carefully selected wood, hand-finished to create a smooth, silky surface, wonderful to hold and even nicer to work on. Unlike many factory-produced boards, this approach results in a surface free of glue seams, designed to last for generations. The boards come pre-finished with a handmade blend of natural mineral oil and organic beeswax which allow the wood to breathe while facilitating the grain’s natural ability to heal itself.

Designed and handmade by Joseph Huebscher in his workshop in Tennessee, our boards are made in small batches. Every step of the process, from tailoring the design of each board to the unique grain of the individual piece of wood to the time-consuming sanding of every board by hand, is carried out with great care, one board at a time.

Joseph collects much of the wood for his work from unwanted trees that have fallen or been taken down around his neighbourhood but on occasion uses wood salvaged from old pieces of furniture or obtained from a local lumber yard. His preference is to work with wood that is unusual or not commercially available and he has been collecting carefully selected pieces of wood for years. Joseph first started working with wood alongside his father as a young boy during the long Southern summers in Tennessee. After several tornados came through the town he had grown up in, and the winds blew down trees all around him, Joseph and his father decided to acquire a small sawmill and put the wood to work rather than let it go to waste. Though every batch of wood he uses is different, much of the material for his projects comes from wood that would otherwise have simply gone to waste.

Curly maple has plenty of variation in the grain of the wood, and each board is unlike any other. We have captured some of this variation in the final three images which show three different boards and how the grain can vary.
