HAND CARVED SWEET GUM COOKING SPATULA
Designed and crafted to be decorative display items for the kitchen as much as functional objects of daily use, our hand-carved cooking spatulas combine the natural beauty of sweet gum wood with artisanal craftmanship to create a kitchen tool that is as enjoyable to have on display as it is to use.
With their sculptured silhouette combining rounded edges with a gently curved handle, our Sweet Gum Cooking Spatula is perfect for stirring, mixing and folding delicate ingredients.
Each spatula is made from a single piece of carefully selected wood and comes pre-finished with a handmade blend of natural mineral oil and organic beeswax which allow the wood to breathe while facilitating the grain’s natural ability to heal itself.
Designed and handmade by Joseph Huebscher in his workshop in Tennessee, our spoons are made in small batches and each spoon comes with a unique story of material and process.
Joseph collects most of the wood for his work from unwanted trees that have fallen or been taken down around his neighbourhood and occasionally uses wood sourced from a local lumber yard or salvaged from old pieces of furniture. His preference is to work with wood that is unusual or not commercially available and he has been collecting carefully selected pieces of wood for years. Joseph first started working with wood alongside his father as a young boy during the long Southern summers in Tennessee. After several tornados came through the town he had grown up in and the winds blew down trees all around him, Joseph and his father decided to acquire a small sawmill and put the wood to work rather than let it go to waste. Though every batch of wood he uses has a unique story, much of the material for his projects comes from wood that would otherwise have simply gone to waste
The pieces of wood used to create our Sweet Gum Spatulas have a distinct story. Years ago, a sweet gum tree in Joseph's neighbourhood had been cut down. The tree cutters were taking the beautiful pieces of wood to the dump when a friend of Joseph's dad saw them and asked if he could put them to use instead. The tree cutters gave him the wood and Joseph and his dad ended up with several of the pieces. These same pieces of wood have served Joseph for years in his spatula and spoon-making and it is exactly these pieces of wood that Sweet Gum Co. was named after.
Due to the handmade nature of these items, spatula sizes can vary slightly.
