Vintage Moroccan Flat-weave Carpet with Red Stripes
A gorgeous and rare vintage Zanafi kilim (flatweave) in bright horizontal bands, woven using undyed local ivory wool, undyed dark brown wool, and a naturally dyed, muted red. Each red stripe is framed by a weave of dark and light zigzag lines and finished with side fringes.
Originating from Aït Ouaouzguite in the High Atlas mountains and often referred to as Taznakht rugs, Zanafi kilims are typically characterised by their long form, intricately woven horizontal stripes, and distinctive side fringes. Multifaceted in their use, these weavings were often employed as sleeping blankets, covering mats of leaves or grasses. This piece is exceptionally well-preserved, vibrant, and a beautiful example of vintage Amazigh weaving.
With acknowledgement and gratitude for the woman weaver who conceptualised and crafted this unique item. Please take the time to discover more about the Amazigh ('Berber') weaving tradition here.
