Originated from a French château and thought to date to the mid-17th century, this remarkable hand-turned wooden bowl is a beautiful example of early utilitarian craftsmanship. Rich in history and shaped by centuries of use, its generous proportions, softly tapered profile, and deeply weathered surface celebrate the enduring beauty of handmade objects.

Turned from a single piece of wood, the bowl retains the fine concentric tool marks of its maker, while its substantial rolled rim and wonderfully sculptural form speak to the honest simplicity of traditional country craftsmanship. Over the centuries, the timber has developed a rich charcoal-brown patina, with areas of natural wear and surface variation that tell the story of a long working life.

Today, this exceptional piece serves as both a functional vessel and a striking decorative object. Whether displayed as a centrepiece on a dining table, styled on a kitchen island, or left empty to appreciate its sculptural beauty, it brings warmth, texture, and an unmistakable sense of history to any interior.

Size: 34 cm diameter x 14 cm tall.

Age/Period: Believed to date from the mid-17th century, circa 1650–1700.

Origin: French.

Material: Hand-turned hardwood.

Condition: Good antique condition, displaying significant age-related wear consistent with centuries of use. The bowl has historic signs of woodworm that have been treated. It has developed a beautifully deep, naturally aged patina, with visible hand-turning marks, areas of historic surface wear, and losses to the original finish throughout the interior. These characteristics are not faults but an integral part of the bowl's history, enhancing its unique character.
