Antique Guatemalan Textile No 2

A beautifully hand-embroidered antique textile from Guatemala, later overdyed in a rich burnt sienna, giving the piece warmth and depth while preserving the intricacy of its original embroidery. The densely stitched surface is composed of geometric motifs, stepped forms, and stylised symbolic figures arranged in rhythmic bands, with a striking diagonal panel of embroidered diamonds creating a strong sense of movement across the textile. Subtle accents of olive green, muted plum, and charcoal emerge through the embroidery, adding quiet contrast and highlighting the extraordinary craftsmanship of the original maker.

Finished with softly textured hand-twisted fringes, this textile possesses both visual richness and a wonderfully tactile quality. Whether displayed as a table runner, hung as a wall textile, or layered across a console or sideboard, it brings warmth, texture, and an understated storied presence to an interior.

Age/Period: Antique, early to mid 20th century.

Material: Handwoven cotton with hand embroidery.

Size: approximately 43 cm x 85 cm without tassels.

Condition: Good antique condition, with age-appropriate wear, minor fraying, and gentle irregularities consistent with its age and previous use. The later overdyeing has been sympathetically carried out, preserving the intricate embroidered detail while giving the textile renewed life and versatility.

Care: As a result of the overdyeing technique, we advise hand washing only when absolutely necessary. Please note that the colour may bleed.
